Vadodara Bridge Disaster: 17 Fatalities Confirmed, Rescue Efforts Underway; Government Orders Investigation and Announces Compensation

The Gambhira bridge collapse in Vadodara, Gujarat, has resulted in a tragic loss of life, with the death toll now reaching 17. Search and rescue teams are still working in the Mahisagar river to locate the two individuals who are still missing. A high-level inquiry has been ordered by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel to determine the cause of the bridge’s collapse. The investigation will encompass a thorough review of the bridge’s repair history, inspections, and quality control measures. The bridge, a crucial connection between Anand and Vadodara via Padra, collapsed on Wednesday, leading to several vehicles being submerged. Four officers have been suspended, pending the outcome of the investigation. The Gujarat government has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those who sustained injuries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his condolences and announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh from the PM National Relief Fund for the next of kin of those who died in the incident.
