Vaishno Devi Disaster: Deputy CM Demands Inquiry, Highlights LG’s Role

The recent heavy rainfall and landslides in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday have caused 35 reported deaths, along with multiple injuries and missing persons. Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary has directed severe criticism towards the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, particularly concerning the disaster at Katra. He questioned why the pilgrimage proceeded despite the unfavorable weather conditions, demanding answers from the CEO of the Shrine Board and the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. Choudhary has described the event as a major catastrophe, requesting significant financial assistance from the Prime Minister and Home Minister. He directly holds the Shrine Board responsible for the tragedy, stating that the LG, as the chairman, should have been aware of the high alert and suspended the pilgrimage. He has accused that the deaths of the Vaishno Devi pilgrims were not accidental, but were part of a criminal conspiracy, and has called for a thorough investigation. The Hotel Association has come forward to offer free lodging to those in need, while local residents have organized protests, holding the Shrine Board accountable. Furthermore, the rainfall in Jammu has broken a 115-year-old record.
