Breaking new ground in eco-conscious port operations, Tuticorin’s VOC Port Authority has earned the IGBC Platinum rating for its administration building, marking it as India’s inaugural major port with this elite certification. Granted on February 4, 2026, the rating validates years of dedication to green policies and conservation.
Energy independence defines the building: 89% solar-generated onsite, 11% from external renewables, achieving full green power. SRI-enhanced roofing reduces urban heat and energy demands effectively.
Water management innovations include IoT metering, air monitoring, harvesting, and efficient fixtures—yielding 37% less potable water use. Full wastewater recycling via STP ensures zero discharge.
BEE’s Zero Energy label applies to admin and guest facilities, balancing consumption with renewables. Hospital and CISF barracks go further with Zero Plus, generating extra power for the grid.
Wellness integrations are comprehensive: tobacco bans, sustainable chemicals, slip-resistant access, inclusive restrooms, EV wheelchair charging, and adaptive lifts. The port’s 70%+ greenery and tree drives enhance biodiversity.
With seven in-house IGBC experts, Chairperson Sushant Kumar Purohit stated, ‘This milestone crowns our efforts in performance, efficiency, and care—pioneering green standards for major ports.’
In an era demanding sustainable logistics, VOC Port’s blueprint offers replicable strategies for ports globally, blending operational excellence with planetary care.
