Voter Roll Revision Backed by Opposition with Key Caveats

Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Anand Dubey has drawn a clear distinction between supporting the principle of voter-list revision and opposing its political weaponization. In Mumbai, he stated that while the Opposition welcomes efforts to cleanse electoral rolls of ineligible entries, it will not tolerate any process that disproportionately affects particular regions, communities, or political opponents. He cited judicial observations from Bihar, where abrupt deletions led to court-mandated reversals, as evidence that haste without safeguards can disenfranchise citizens. Dubey called for standardized operating procedures across states, time-bound grievance redressal, and publication of detailed deletion lists for public scrutiny. Addressing illegal immigration, he acknowledged the need to prevent non-citizens from voting but warned against collateral damage to long-settled families unable to produce legacy documents instantly. He recommended leveraging Aadhaar linkage and digitized land records to create an objective verification framework. Dubey further criticized what he described as selective enforcement by central agencies against non-BJP governments, citing high-profile cases in West Bengal and Jharkhand. He asserted that the Opposition would meet every legal challenge in court while rejecting violence as a response. Finally, he pressed the Centre to translate its border-security rhetoric into accelerated deportations using existing paramilitary resources.
