The Indian Army is actively enhancing its defense capabilities with the introduction of new weaponry. To further strengthen its arsenal, the army is set to receive 25 Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) Dhruv Mk III. This procurement, ordered from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in March 2024, represents a significant advancement for the Indian military.

The deal, worth over ₹8,073 crore, is aimed at modernizing the army’s aviation wing, particularly for operations in difficult terrains such as the Siachen Glacier and Ladakh. The Dhruv Mk III stands out due to its advanced equipment. Each helicopter will be equipped with an electro-optical (EO) pod from Israel’s Elbit Systems and an Integrated Defensive Aids Suite (IDAS) from Sweden’s Saab. These systems enhance operational effectiveness and strengthen the helicopter’s defenses in combat scenarios. The Dhruv Mk III, designed and manufactured by HAL, is a multi-role helicopter. Its utility variant (Mk III UT) is highly effective for transporting troops and cargo, search and rescue missions, reconnaissance, and medical evacuations.

Its demonstrated performance in high-altitude environments like Siachen and Ladakh makes it an invaluable asset for the Indian Army. The Elbit Systems EO pod offers advanced day-and-night surveillance, target identification, and designation capabilities, including high-resolution thermal imaging, a laser range finder, and a target designator, ensuring precision in all weather conditions. The Saab IDAS safeguards the helicopter from threats such as missiles.

The incorporation of these technologies will establish the Dhruv Mk-III as a powerful platform in modern warfare, providing the Indian Army with a strategic advantage against potential adversaries and enabling it to counter fighter aircraft like the JF-17. The contract includes 25 Dhruv Mk III helicopters for the army and 9 for the Coast Guard. This deal is a major step towards the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission. Impressively, HAL delivered the first six helicopters to the army by the end of March 2024, just two weeks after the deal was signed.
