Following a fatal accident on Mumbai’s local trains, Indian Railways is set to redesign its non-AC trains with enhanced safety features. The redesign includes automatic door-closing mechanisms and improvements to ventilation systems. These changes are intended to address safety concerns arising from crowded conditions on local trains. The Railway Board has confirmed that the redesigned trains will be ready by November 2025 and operational by January 2026. The new design incorporates doors with louvres and roof-mounted ventilation units to boost airflow, alongside the inclusion of vestibules. The upgrades come after four commuters died and nine were injured in an incident near Mumbra railway station due to overcrowding on trains.
