In an effort to strengthen its aerial capabilities, the Indian Air Force is considering acquiring the SU-57E, a fifth-generation stealth fighter jet from Russia. Along with the purchase of the aircraft, the discussions include the possibility of local assembly and joint production within India.

India currently does not possess a fifth-generation stealth fighter jet, and the SU-57E could meet this requirement. The aircraft’s ability to carry the Russian 3M22 Zircon hypersonic missile is a key feature. The Zircon missile’s speed, exceeding Mach 9, makes it nearly impossible to intercept with current air defense systems. Moreover, the SU-57E can also carry the BrahMos missile, which is a joint venture between India and Russia.

This acquisition could provide India with a significant advantage over China and Pakistan in terms of air superiority. The SU-57E, armed with the Zircon missile, would provide the Air Force with the capability to strike both ground and sea targets effectively.

This deal has the potential to be highly beneficial for Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). Russia has offered full technology transfer, joint production, and the integration of Indian-made systems.

    * HAL will gain the opportunity to learn about stealth technology and supercruise capabilities.
    * Production of the SU-57E could potentially take place at the Nashik plant, where the SU-30MKI is currently manufactured.
    * Some sources suggest that a portion of the aircraft will come directly from Russia, with the remainder being produced by HAL. This could assist India in resolving its squadron shortfall.
    * This venture will create job opportunities and could potentially enable India to export these aircraft in the future.

The local production of the SU-57E could prove to be more cost-effective compared to acquiring Western aircraft such as the F-35. Additionally, HAL will be responsible for the maintenance and upgrades, ensuring sustained revenue.

Some challenges may arise, including the risk of US sanctions, engine maturity, and past issues associated with the FGFA project. However, with Russia’s support and HAL’s existing capabilities, these challenges are believed to be manageable.

By pursuing this deal, India would join a select group of countries with hypersonic weapon systems, which would enhance the Air Force’s strike capabilities and strengthen India’s position in the Indo-Pacific region.
