A landmark year for India’s defence capabilities has culminated in its positioning as the world’s third-most powerful military force, according to the 2025 Asia Power Index. This elevation is driven by a dual focus on enhancing indigenous defence technology and significantly boosting its export market. India is projected to surpass Rs 30,000 crore in defence exports by March 2026, a substantial leap from its current standing and a critical step towards achieving its long-term goal of Rs 50,000 crore by 2029. The ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative has been instrumental in this transformation, fostering domestic production that now accounts for over 65% of the country’s defence equipment needs. Events like ‘Operation Sindoor’ have effectively demonstrated India’s technological edge and strategic readiness. Defence production has reached record highs, exceeding Rs 1.54 lakh crore in 2025, while exports have grown robustly. The nation’s defence products are now supplied to over 100 countries, signaling its growing influence. To further consolidate its position, a notable increase of 20-25% in the defense budget is anticipated for 2026-27, with a keen focus on AI-driven systems, advanced platforms, and the modernization of its armed forces.
