India has experienced a remarkable rise in the Global Innovation Index, currently occupying the 38th position. This represents a significant improvement compared to its 81st ranking in 2015. The government’s policies, the talent of the youth, the digital revolution, and the flourishing startup ecosystem have all played a pivotal role in driving India’s innovation forward.

In the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2025, published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), India has secured the 38th position among 139 economies. This marks a substantial achievement, progressing from its 81st rank in 2015. Switzerland leads the GII 2025 rankings. The index assesses the innovation capabilities of nearly 140 economies based on approximately 80 parameters, encompassing R&D spending, venture capital deals, high-tech exports, and intellectual property filings.

India’s progress is significantly attributed to the increased emphasis on Research and Development (R&D). Both the central and state governments are implementing schemes aimed at fostering scientific research, technological advancements, and innovative experimentation. Moreover, initiatives like Startup India have provided a platform for young individuals to translate their ideas into successful businesses. Today, India is a leading participant in the global startup ecosystem.

The Digital India initiative has also played a vital role in accelerating innovation. The extension of internet and digital services to rural regions has created fresh opportunities in education, healthcare, and commerce. Simultaneously, Indian companies are rapidly gaining traction in sectors such as fintech, e-commerce, and artificial intelligence.

Furthermore, venture capital investments and private sector engagement have enhanced innovation in India. The financial support provided to budding entrepreneurs’ innovative concepts is facilitating the global recognition of numerous startups. Education and skill development remain essential components of India’s innovation trajectory. Prestigious institutions like IITs, IIMs, and other prominent organizations are actively encouraging research and innovation.
