Russia is actively promoting its export-spec Su-57E stealth fighter to India, proposing a deal that includes substantial technology transfer and local manufacturing capabilities. Vadim Badekha, CEO of Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (OAK), articulated that the offer aims to establish a complete future air combat ecosystem for India, going beyond a simple aircraft purchase. He believes the Su-57E is the only fighter jet that meets the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) long-range needs. The proposed framework involves initial aircraft deliveries from Russia, followed by licensed production in India. Additionally, a plan exists to integrate select Su-57 technologies into the IAF’s existing Su-30MKI fleet, providing immediate upgrades and a pathway for technological advancement. Russian sources indicate that the Su-57E has been significantly enhanced since India’s withdrawal from the FGFA program in 2018, featuring upgraded sensors, advanced weapon systems, and the ongoing development of the ‘stage two’ Izdeliye 177 engine, which offers improved supercruise, reduced radar signature, and better infrared management. OAK emphasizes the offer as a comprehensive program designed to foster India’s self-reliance in air power, including operational knowledge and independent maintenance and upgrade capabilities, supporting the ‘Make in India’ initiative. This renewed sales drive follows President Putin’s recent visit to India, where defense collaboration was a key discussion point. Russia views this deal as strategically vital for maintaining its significant defense relationship with India and for sustaining its advanced weapons manufacturing production lines. The Su-57E, with its updated features, comprehensive technology transfer, and local assembly potential, represents a substantial upgrade from previous Russian offers, posing a critical strategic choice for the IAF regarding the investment in advanced stealth technology and its integration with current air assets for future air dominance.
