India’s Oil Diplomacy: Navigating US Pressure Amidst Shifting Global Policies

The United States has adopted a stricter approach toward India regarding its oil purchases from Russia. Washington has imposed tariffs on India, threatening further economic measures if such imports continue. New Delhi has reacted by opposing the US threats, emphasizing its commitment to its independent foreign policy and economic interests. At the same time, an older comment from former US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, is circulating. In a past conference, Garcetti stated that the US had, at one point, encouraged India to buy Russian oil, primarily to maintain stability in global oil markets. This historical perspective is now being questioned, particularly as the US attempts to pressure India for allegedly supporting Russia in the Ukrainian war.
