A tactical gamble backfired for India in Visakhapatnam as New Zealand clinched a commanding 50-run victory in the fourth T20I. Captain Suryakumar Yadav, however, defended his approach, framing it as essential preparation for the 2026 T20 World Cup.

New Zealand’s innings exploded to 215/7, with half-centuries nearly from Conway (44) and Seifert (62) setting a daunting target. India managed only 165 in 18.4 overs, their series streak snapped.

SKY’s post-match analysis was revealing. Winning the toss, he chose to field to simulate tough chases. ‘We played with six batters and five bowlers intentionally,’ he explained. ‘It’s about testing scenarios like chasing 200 with quick wickets lost – crucial for World Cup readiness.’

He stressed player rotations: ‘We targeted opportunities for confirmed World Cup picks. Plenty of alternatives existed, but this was deliberate.’

Dew factored heavily, per SKY. ‘First innings batting has suited us, but pressure chases build character. Dube’s knock was gritty; one solid partnership could’ve changed everything. In dew-affected games, those 40-50 run stands bridge the gap.’

The defeat, while stinging, aligns with India’s forward-thinking strategy. Suryakumar’s leadership prioritizes global tournament simulations, ensuring the squad hones skills in high-stakes environments ahead of the decider.
