The U20 Asian Rugby Sevens Championship kicked off in Rajgir, Bihar, on Saturday, marking a significant event with a two-day schedule. This is the first time the state has hosted an international rugby match. The championship’s opening day was filled with excitement, with standout performances from India’s Under-20 teams. The women’s team impressed in the Asia Rugby Emirates Rugby 7s Under-20 Championship, securing a place in the semi-finals. The men’s team also celebrated a landmark win, defeating the UAE at the Under-20 level for the first time.

Led by coach Kiano Fory and captain Bhumika Shukla, the women’s team began their campaign strongly, defeating Kazakhstan 17-10. Guria Kumari, Anshu Kumari, and Alpana Kumari from Bihar each scored a try, setting a positive tone for the team’s performance.

The women’s team continued their successful run in the afternoon, defeating the UAE with a score of 31-7. Captain Bhumika scored two tries, with vice-captain Tanushree Bhosale, along with Muskan Piploda and Anshu also adding to the score. This victory guaranteed their semi-final spot prior to their final pool match against Hong Kong China.

In the men’s category, the team under coach Paco Hernandez achieved a historic milestone by defeating the UAE 24-17. This victory represents India’s first win against the UAE at the Under-20 level and the first time they have scored against them across five matches involving the Under-18 and Under-20 teams. Charan Hembram opened the scoring with a try and conversion, with Golden Kumar and David Munda also contributing tries. David’s second try ensured India’s victory, despite the UAE’s attempted comeback.

Unfortunately, the men’s team could not maintain this momentum in the following Pool A matches, losing to Sri Lanka and Hong Kong China with a score of 52-4. Sri Lanka and Hong Kong China secured the top positions in Pool A, while China and Malaysia led in Pool B. The Indian Under-20 women’s team will compete in the semi-finals, while the men’s team will play Kazakhstan for the fifth position.
