A tragic discovery was made on Sunday in the Baghota Tola area of the Balumath block in Latehar district: a wild elephant calf was found dead. Following the report, the forest department swiftly deployed a team to the location and secured the deceased calf. Local villagers reported that they came across the young elephant near a paddy field on Sunday. Upon realizing the calf was deceased, they immediately alerted the forest department. Under the direction of DFO Pravesh Agarwal, a forest department team led by Forest Officer Vijay Shankar Sharma investigated the scene. After gathering preliminary information, details were passed on to senior officials within the department. To determine the cause of death, a team of veterinary specialists was dispatched to conduct a post-mortem examination of the elephant calf. The Forest Officer confirmed that the cause of death would be officially announced after the post-mortem report is released.

Local residents indicated that a herd of approximately 10 to 12 wild elephants had entered the village the previous night, causing damage to the crops in the paddy fields. It is suspected that the calf may have died due to being crushed by the herd.
