Among the noteworthy features are the dynamic adaptation of the date and time font and design to the wallpaper. Applications will feature a translucent appearance with optical qualities. The home screen will showcase redesigned app icons with options for light and dark appearances, color tints, and clear designs.
Control Center elements will respond to their surroundings, refracting colors and shapes. While the design aims for a more cohesive experience, initial testing revealed some user issues with text and icon visibility against transparent backgrounds.
Apple Intelligence integration is a significant aspect of this update. New intelligence features include Live Translation, which automatically converts text messages, provides captions during FaceTime calls, and delivers spoken translations within the phone application.
Visual intelligence features will enable users to directly interact with content, such as adding details to photos and events and adding them to their calendar, or extracting information from emails and converting it into reminders. The system will also facilitate cross-app search and image creation. The Image Playground allows users to create custom graphics using a combination of emojis and text descriptions. Personalized emojis will be available.
Communication tools are also getting updates, including call screening, automated handling of unidentified numbers, and prompts for callers to identify themselves. Messages will have similar screening tools. A Hold and Assist feature will notify users when an agent answers their call. There will also be enhanced filtering for messages. Group chats will be able to use polls for decision-making.
The Maps application will become more intelligent, tracking travel patterns and alerting users about preferred routes. The app will adapt to changes in travel routines.
Apple Music will introduce an Auto Mix feature that seamlessly blends songs using beat matching and time-stretching techniques. The update will also translate lyrics into the user’s preferred language and provide context for international music.
Compatible devices for iOS 26 include the iPhone 11 and later, the second-generation iPhone SE, and newer models. Specifically, this includes the iPhone 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16 series, along with the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air. Note that some features may not be available globally at launch, due to language and regional restrictions.
