At least two people were killed and 26 others injured in a massive pileup involving more than 50 vehicles on the Kan-etsu Expressway in Gunma Prefecture, Japan, as heavy snowfall created hazardous driving conditions. The major accident occurred Friday evening, highlighting the dangers of winter weather on Japanese highways.

The incident was triggered by a truck collision with another stopped truck amidst icy roads caused by the severe snowfall. This initial crash set off a chain reaction, involving dozens of vehicles over a considerable distance. The slippery conditions made it extremely difficult for drivers to react and control their vehicles.

Among the fatalities were an elderly woman and a truck driver. The injured, numbering 26, were transported for medical attention, with five reported to be in serious condition and 21 suffering from minor injuries.

The scene was further complicated by fires that engulfed at least 10 vehicles, requiring an extended seven-hour firefighting operation. The expressway was closed for cleanup and investigation as severely damaged vehicles were removed. Survivors described a terrifying experience, with one driver noting the inability to steer effectively on the ice and the cacophony of collisions. The accident occurred despite warnings about heavy snow and recommendations for reduced speeds. Investigations into the precise causes were ongoing.
