Chief Minister Hemant Soren has affirmed the Jharkhand government’s commitment to improving the lives of individuals affected by sickle cell disease, focusing on better treatment and overall well-being. He acknowledged that the impact of the disease extends beyond the patient to the entire family, requiring a wide-ranging approach. Addressing an event organized by UNICEF for Sickle Cell Awareness Day, he interacted with affected youth, emphasizing the importance of public awareness. He believes that the disease can be managed through collective action.

The Chief Minister highlighted the need for expanded screening to enable early diagnosis and prompt treatment. He noted that many individuals are unaware of their status, potentially leading to transmission to future generations. He recommended increased screening coupled with counseling and access to required medical resources. He also suggested screening newborns to allow for prompt treatment. The government is collaborating with organizations like UNICEF to address sickle cell disease, with health initiatives to improve the state’s healthcare system. The goal is to create health profiles for better disease management.

The Chief Minister directed the health department to set up robust systems for testing and treating sickle cell patients, including easy access to blood and medication. He stressed the importance of health counselors in the process of screening and counseling. He also interacted with several patients, gaining insights into their experiences, struggles, and medical requirements. He assured them of government support.
