Political realignments continue to reshape Jharkhand’s landscape, with ex-MLA Akil Akhtar lending his weight to AIMIM. The veteran leader from Pakur joined the Owaisi-led party at Darussalam in Hyderabad, marking a key win for AIMIM’s northern ambitions.

Post-joining, Akhtar articulated his rationale: AIMIM uniquely amplifies marginalized voices. He anticipates his role will fortify the party’s grassroots in Jharkhand, where it seeks to carve a niche.

Barrister Owaisi lauded the addition. ‘Akhtar’s seasoned insights will chart our path forward in Jharkhand,’ he declared amid cheers from state unit heads including treasurer Kaiser Imam and general secretary Intekhhab Ansari.

Akhtar’s resume is a tapestry of shifts. JMM launched him, but expulsion led to his students’ party venture. In 2024, SP’s banner saw him fight Pakur as the poll’s richest contender, though victory eluded him.

This induction fits AIMIM’s template of attracting defectors with local clout, mirroring successes elsewhere. In Jharkhand, it targets Santhal Pargana’s demographics, promising advocacy on education, health, and anti-discrimination.

Critics question sustainability, but supporters point to Akhtar’s affluence and networks as game-changers. With state polls on horizon, AIMIM’s Jharkhand chapter eyes multiple seats, potentially fragmenting opposition votes and stirring coalitions.
