In a remarkable display of communal harmony, a Hindu family in Hedum village, Jharkhand, has been observing the Muslim festival of Muharram for 71 years. The family, led by Kamakhya Singh Bhogta, continues the tradition, even though the village is entirely Hindu. The family’s observance extends beyond Muharram, as they also celebrate Ramadan, Eid, and Bakrid. The Muharram celebrations include the preparation of the Tazia and a procession, with the participation of the entire village. A fair is held at Kalyanpur Bazar Tand. The tradition began with Kamakhya Singh’s grandfather. The family attributes the tradition’s origin to the advice of a fakir (hermit), leading them to embrace Muslim festivals and fostering a spirit of inclusivity.
