Jharkhand’s Jeetpur Coal Mine Shuts Down After Over a Century of Operation

The Jeetpur coal mine, located in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, has been permanently closed by SAIL management after 109 years of operation, citing safety concerns. A notice from General Manager Manish Kumar confirmed the closure. The mine’s operations had been suspended since April 23, 2024, with essential services still running until Tuesday. The closure is related to flooding from the adjacent Jamadoba 6/7 pits and 2 pits collieries owned by Tata Steel. As per the directives of DGMS and SINFAR, SAIL had already ceased sending workers to the Jeetpur mine from April 23, 2024. Around 145 workers are now facing relocation. The shutdown will affect the local economies in the areas of Nonikdih, Jeetpur, and the Jamadoba market. The mine was known for producing steel-grade coal throughout its existence.
