Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has announced his opposition to the canal project intended to supply water to Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan. Speaking in Jammu, he stated that J&K does not have the resources to spare, citing drought-like conditions. Abdullah’s decision has drawn criticism from the Shiromani Akali Dal. He also mentioned that Punjab already has water access via the Indus Water Treaty, and J&K was not assisted when it needed water. The proposed canal project spans 113 kilometers, and Abdullah’s position indicates the beginning of a potential water dispute.
