Journey from Laborer to ‘Mason’ New identity for Sukma workers through the initiative of sensitive governance Raipur, January 13, 2026/ The impact of the Chhattisgarh government’s sensitive, inclusive, and welfare-oriented vision is now clearly visible even in remote and Naxal-affected areas. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai, the state government’s objective is not merely the implementation of schemes but to bring about a dignified change in the lives of the common people. A living example of this vision is being seen in Sukma district, where unskilled MGNREGA workers are now stepping towards self-reliance by becoming skilled masons. A special mason training program is being conducted for 30 workers registered under MGNREGA through the Rural Self Employment Training Institute (RSETI) in coordination with the Panchayat and Rural Development Department by the district administration. In this training, practical information is being provided on important subjects such as brick-masonry, building layout, construction techniques from plinth to roof, quality control, and workplace safety. This initiative has been started at a time when 25,974 houses have been sanctioned for the years 2024-26 under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) in Sukma district. This effort, started under the guidance of Collector Shri Amit Kumar and District Panchayat CEO Shri Mukund Thakur, is serving a dual purpose. On one hand, skilled masons are becoming available locally, while on the other, rural workers are getting dignified employment near their villages. This skill upgradation will increase the income of the workers and improve the standard of living of their families. This confluence of MGNREGA, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, and skill development is further strengthening the foundation of self-reliant India in a remote district like Sukma. Chetannal from Jaimer village, who is receiving mason training, says that this is not just brick and mortar work; it is about gaining employment with self-respect and dignity. Now we will not have to depend on others for work and our income will also be higher than before. Now we will be able to turn our dreams into reality along with building others’ houses.
