Kashmir Valley Under Siege: Heavy Rains Trigger Flooding and Damage

A relentless downpour has lashed Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh over the last day, prompting a series of alerts and preventive actions. The Chenab River has witnessed escalating water levels, urging officials to issue warnings to inhabitants, especially in Doda district, to keep away from its banks. The rising river levels may have caused casualties in Doda; the authorities are working to assess the full situation. To manage the overflow, the Baglihar and Salal dams have been forced to open their gates, releasing water to prevent potential flooding in the downstream areas. A flash flood and landslide struck the Stakpa area in Ladakh’s Kargil district; however, there were no reports of major damage or injuries. The forecast indicates continued rainfall for the Jammu division for the next 24 hours, with people being encouraged to be vigilant near water sources. Srinagar, specifically the Soura area, has also been significantly affected by the rainfall, with numerous homes experiencing water seepage, damaging ground floors and causing difficulties for the families.
