The Kolkata law college student rape case has brought forth disturbing information about the primary suspect, Manojit Mishra, who is accused of being a serial offender. Reports indicate that Mishra, known as ‘Mango,’ exhibited a pattern of sexually aggressive behavior. BJP leader Amit Malviya has drawn attention to Mishra’s connections with the Trinamool Congress.

Mishra reportedly initiated contact with women by asking, “Tui amay biye korbi?” meaning “Will you marry me?” He was expelled from the college’s Trinamool unit in 2021 after using the same phrase on campus. A student stated that Mishra and his associates created a climate of fear, particularly for girls. They added that authorities did not act on complaints made against him.

Mishra’s political affiliations are detailed. He was the former President of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) at South Calcutta Law College, and currently serves as the General Secretary of TMCP in the South Kolkata district. Despite some attempts by TMC leaders to distance themselves, Mishra has been seen with senior TMC officials, including Abhishek Banerjee. His social media profiles reveal his presence at various TMC events.

Amit Malviya criticized the TMC’s association with Mishra. Malviya said that the party’s claim of not knowing about Mishra’s background is ‘criminal.’ He stated that Mishra had been accused of attempted murder since 2013 and had numerous molestation complaints against him. Malviya questioned why no action was ever taken. Malviya emphasized that Mishra was known for harassing girls, making unwelcome marriage proposals, and threatening those who resisted him. Malviya added that Mishra was given a role in a government college in 2023. Malviya revealed that Mishra recorded private moments with girls and shared them.

The gang-rape occurred at South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata on June 25. The police have apprehended four individuals, including Mishra, and a special team has been formed to investigate. Mishra, along with Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukerjee, has been charged with rape. This incident follows the RG Kar hospital rape and murder case, which has sparked substantial political controversy in West Bengal.
