President Donald Trump has authorized the deployment of an additional 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles. The Department of Defence confirmed this move to assist ICE and federal law enforcement. This follows a previous order for 2,000 troops issued on Saturday in response to immigration protests. Sean Parnell from the Department of Defence, confirmed that the California National Guard will be mobilized to support ICE and enable federal law enforcement officers to safely conduct their duties. California has since filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, challenging the legality of the deployments. A White House spokesperson responded by saying that California Governor Gavin Newsom should be prioritizing prosecuting protestors over the lawsuit. California Attorney General Rob Bonta has criticized Trump’s decision, stating it is ‘unnecessary, counterproductive, and unlawful’. He added that the action was an abuse of federal authority and in violation of the 10th Amendment and federal law. Governor Newsom has accused Trump of creating fear and terror to take over a state militia and violate the US Constitution. The protests stem from ICE raids that led to the arrest of dozens of undocumented immigrants.
