In a bold move, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has directly challenged Iran, asserting that no group within Lebanon is authorized to possess weaponry or depend on external support. This declaration was made during a meeting with Ali Larijani, the secretary of Iran’s foremost security institution.

President Aoun’s statement followed the Lebanese cabinet’s endorsement of a US-backed initiative aimed at disarming Hezbollah, which receives backing from Iran, as mandated by the 2006 UN Security Council resolution. This initiative has been met with criticism from Iran. This piece delves into the background of the Lebanese president.

Joseph Khalil Aoun: Lebanon’s Commando President
Joseph Khalil Aoun, born on January 10, 1964, holds the distinction of being both Lebanon’s 14th president and a resolute army general. Prior to assuming the presidency on January 9, 2025, he held the position of commander of the Lebanese army. Aoun’s military service commenced in 1983 during the Lebanese Civil War, and he underwent training in the United States, Syria, and Lebanon.

    Counter-Terrorism Training
He enhanced his skills through counter-terrorism training in the US in 2008 and in Lebanon in 2013. During the 1990 Elimination War, Aoun served as a lieutenant within the commando regiment. Following the loss of his leader, Aoun assumed command, showcasing his leadership during a critical situation.

    Political Ascent
Aoun’s political presence gained momentum in 2022, when Samir Geagea, the leader of the Lebanese Forces party, recognized his suitability for the presidency. Aoun also received backing from Qatar, the US, France, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. As president, Aoun’s clear message is one of rejecting foreign intervention, ensuring the army’s exclusive control of weaponry, and upholding Lebanon’s sovereignty.
