The Indian government has introduced significant increases in vehicle registration renewal fees to reduce the number of older vehicles on the roads. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is implementing the changes. Light motor vehicles (LMVs) over 20 years old will now have a renewal fee of Rs 10,000, a rise from Rs 5,000. Motorcycle renewal fees have doubled to Rs 2,000 from Rs 1,000. The renewal fee for three-wheelers and quadricycles increased from Rs 3,500 to Rs 5,000. Imported vehicles face a substantial increase: Rs 20,000 for those with two or three wheels, and Rs 80,000 for vehicles with four or more wheels. These changes were finalized on August 21 after a draft was released in February. In October 2021, the ministry had previously adjusted these fees. The Supreme Court recently issued a decision against imposing strict measures on older diesel (10 years) and petrol (15 years) vehicles in Delhi-NCR, based on a plea by the Delhi government.
