Farmers in Maharashtra are set to benefit from a landmark decision as the Central Government approves the purchase of 3.37 lakh metric tons of toor at MSP rates totaling around Rs 2,696 crore via the Price Support Scheme. The announcement from the Agriculture Ministry highlights the government’s responsive approach to falling crop prices.

Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, overseeing Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, led the approval process in a dedicated New Delhi meeting. With toor prices slumping below MSP, PSS procurement ensures fair returns for producers.

Chouhan deliberated operational details with Maharashtra’s Jaykumar Rawal, directing NAFED, NCCF, and local authorities on implementation. He highlighted the decision’s financial weight but praised PM Modi’s vision for farmer-centric policies.

Direct procurement from fields to agencies was emphasized to cut out middlemen, channeling benefits straight to genuine farmers. Chouhan pushed for tech integration in registrations and monitoring to uphold transparency standards.

To avoid bottlenecks, he ordered an increase in procurement centers wherever required, prioritizing farmer convenience and operational efficiency.

The strategic conclave featured Rawal, Secretary Devesh Chaturvedi, and senior stakeholders. This step reinforces India’s commitment to pulse farmers, stabilizing supply chains and mitigating price crashes that have plagued the sector.
