Since February 2025, Manipur has been under President’s rule, following the resignation of then-Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on February 9. The absence of an elected government since then resulted in the imposition of President’s rule. Now, the focus is on forming a government in the state, with several leaders arriving in Delhi. The Governor is also currently in Delhi. President’s rule has been in effect for more than seven months.

BJP MLAs from Manipur have traveled to Delhi to meet with central leaders regarding the formation of a government. Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, along with seven other MLAs, is in Delhi for discussions.

Before leaving for Delhi, N. Biren Singh explained, “I will discuss with central leaders about forming a new government, addressing the crisis faced by internally displaced people, and advocating for the immediate reopening of major highways.”

Two distinct groups of MLAs are in Delhi. Former Minister Sapam Ranjan Singh, Heikham Dingo Singh, and BJP MLA Thongbam Robindro Singh traveled with the former Chief Minister to Delhi on Saturday. Additionally, some MLAs from the Meitei community have also arrived in Delhi, including former ministers Leishangthem Susindro Meitei, Thangjam Arun Kumar, and Lourembam Rameshwor. These groups traveled separately.

Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, former Minister Govindas Konthoujam, and MLAs Kongkham Robindro, Sapam Kunjakeshwar, Thounaojam Shyamkumar, and Karam Shyam might also be traveling to Delhi. The surge in leaders in Delhi suggests that a Manipur government could be formed soon. Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah recently visited Manipur.

President’s rule was implemented following the CM’s resignation. The violence in Manipur has led to hundreds of fatalities. Before the imposition of President’s rule on February 13th, a BJP-led coalition government was in power, led by Biren Singh. N. Biren Singh resigned on February 9, 2025, in the wake of violence that began on May 3, 2023. President’s rule was implemented four days later and has been in place for about seven months.
