Marco Rubio and S. Jaishankar Discuss Bilateral and International Issues in New York

The US and India are facing ongoing trade and policy disagreements, specifically regarding tariffs, trade, and the H-1B visa. Against this backdrop, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar met with US Senator Marco Rubio in New York. After the meeting, Rubio stated that India is a crucial partner for the United States. The meeting took place during the United Nations General Assembly. In a public statement, Rubio underscored the strong ties with New Delhi. The US Department of State indicated that the meeting addressed many facets of the bilateral relationship, including trade, defense, energy, pharmaceuticals, and critical minerals. Jaishankar shared information about the meeting on X, stating that they discussed a variety of current bilateral and international issues. They agreed on the need for sustained engagement to advance priority areas. Recent actions by the Trump administration have led to tensions in trade relations, including a 25% tariff on Indian goods. Trump’s reasoning for the added tariff was to pressure Russia and its allies to seek a ceasefire in Ukraine. India, in contrast, has continually backed a ceasefire. Despite some reservations about the India-Russia relationship from certain White House officials, both Donald Trump and PM Modi have shown support for closer relations and a resumption of trade talks.
