President Donald Trump has reiterated his assertion that India has agreed to significantly reduce its reliance on Russian oil imports. He warned of imposing ‘massive tariffs’ on India if this alleged commitment is not met. Trump shared that he had a conversation with Prime Minister Modi, who supposedly assured him that India would cease purchasing Russian oil.
Despite India’s clear denial of any such discussion, Trump insisted on his version of events, stating that non-compliance would lead to severe financial penalties. He also mentioned that India has already started to decrease its Russian oil intake. This ongoing dispute is framed against a backdrop of previous US trade policies, notably a substantial tariff imposed on India for its Russian oil purchases, while China faced different measures.
