Morne Morkel, the Indian bowling coach, has expressed a strong belief in the potential inclusion of seasoned campaigners Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in India’s squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Morkel emphasized that their extensive experience and proven ability to perform under pressure are critical advantages for the national team. This endorsement comes as debates continue regarding the future international commitments of these two cricketing giants, particularly after their recent decision to retire from Test cricket.

Following their departure from the T20 international scene after last year’s World Cup victory, the question of their participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup remains a prominent talking point. Morkel, however, pointed out the significant benefits derived from their leadership and on-field prowess. “They are definitely quality players,” Morkel stated during a press interaction. “If they commit to the required hard work and maintain their fitness, their experience is something you simply cannot substitute. They have tasted victory and understand the demands of playing in major tournaments.”

He further commented, “Undoubtedly, if they stay fit and feel their bodies are up to the task, the World Cup is still a considerable distance away.” Morkel also discussed the team’s recent performance in the Test series, stressing the importance of refocusing on their white-ball strategies. “It was a dispiriting period for us. But we’ve had a brief reflective phase. The priority now is to channel all our efforts into the white-ball team. We have a strong record in white-ball cricket, and the addition of Virat and Rohit would bring a surge of fresh energy. We are excited about playing white-ball cricket over the next few weeks.”

In addition, Morkel provided updates on the fitness status of Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer. Gill is recovering well from a neck issue, and Iyer has commenced his rehabilitation program for his injury.
