Madhya Pradesh’s tiger legacy faces scrutiny after 55 deaths last year, yet 38 were due to natural causes, and the population is growing stronger than ever. As India’s top tiger habitat, the state demonstrates resilience through smart conservation.

From 2018-2022, MP’s tigers increased 49 percent, dwarfing the national 24 percent gain and boasting double the average yearly growth. Mortality analysis shows MP’s rate slightly above national norms, thanks to precise tracking in its vast protected networks.

Natural deaths dominated at 69 percent: clashes between tigers, health issues, seniority, mishaps, and traffic hits. Human-related poaching hit 20 percent (11 cases), primarily defensive electrocutions, with 11 percent (6 tigers) targeted for illicit trade—prompting immediate forest department interventions.

Topping the 2022 census with 785 tigers out of India’s 3,682, MP sustains 11 parks, 26 sanctuaries, and 9 reserves. Initiatives like scientific monitoring, prey base enhancement, and conflict resolution keep populations surging, positioning the state as a global model.
