A new chapter in Pakistan’s military history has begun with the formal appointment of Field Marshal Asim Munir as the country’s inaugural Chief of Defence Forces (CDF). This significant five-year appointment, approved by President Asif Ali Zardari based on a summary from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, signifies a major shift in military leadership. Field Marshal Munir will continue his duties as Chief of Army Staff while simultaneously heading the newly established CDF office. The creation of this apex position follows the enactment of the 27th Constitutional Amendment, which has led to the dissolution of the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee. Munir’s tenure as Army Chief, initially for three years from November 2022, was previously extended for five years in 2024. The government also confirmed a two-year extension for Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu, beginning after his current term concludes in March 2026. This restructuring is expected to enhance unified command and operational synergy.
