The first day of Parliament’s Winter Session saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially welcome CP Radhakrishnan, the new Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. PM Modi spoke highly of Radhakrishnan’s extensive background in social service, his humble origins, and his impactful work, particularly with tribal populations. The Prime Minister emphasized Radhakrishnan’s unique ability to connect with people without being bound by protocol, suggesting this would be a significant asset to the Upper House’s functioning. He expressed full confidence that the House would uphold its dignity and standards under his tenure.

In a pre-session address, Prime Minister Modi also conveyed his expectations for the Winter Session, urging the opposition to adopt a more constructive and positive approach. He criticized the tendency of some parties to use parliamentary time for political venting or as a pre-election stage. Modi stressed that Parliament is a forum for ‘delivery’ and national progress, not ‘drama.’ He pointed to the recent election turnouts as a sign of public engagement and called for the session to focus on India’s developmental trajectory. The Prime Minister also called for a more accommodating environment for new MPs, ensuring that first-time parliamentarians, regardless of party affiliation, have the opportunity to voice issues pertinent to their constituents and the nation.
