Emirates Airlines has changed its policy regarding power banks on flights. Many passengers use power banks to charge their phones and other devices while flying. This new policy limits passengers to carrying one power bank, and it must have a capacity of less than 100 watt-hours (Wh). While passengers are allowed to carry the power bank on board, its use during the flight is restricted.

This decision is primarily about safety. Power banks utilize lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries, which are prone to overheating and could cause a fire. The process of thermal runaway can cause the battery’s temperature to increase dramatically, potentially resulting in a fire or an explosion. This policy is implemented to mitigate any safety risks associated with batteries on the aircraft.
