Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his 2014 address to the United Nations General Assembly proposed that one day should be recognized globally for celebrating and practicing yoga.

In his address, Modi said that yoga is an invaluable gift of India’s ancient traditions. Yoga symbolizes the totality of unity of mind and body, thought and action.

He said that yoga is not just an exercise, it is a way of discovering a sense of unity with oneself, the world and nature.
