The establishment of the National Turmeric Board is set to transform the turmeric sector, with a target of USD 1 billion in exports by 2030. The headquarters in Nizamabad, Telangana, was inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. This development follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement. The formation of the board addresses long-standing needs of turmeric farmers. Shah emphasized that the board will remove the dependence on middlemen, and facilitate packing, branding, marketing and exports. He emphasized the numerous health benefits of turmeric. India is the largest producer, consumer, and exporter of turmeric worldwide, accounting for over 62% of the global trade. In 2023-24, exports of turmeric and its products reached 1.62 lakh tonnes, valued at USD 226.5 million.
The National Turmeric Board, constituted on October 4, 2023, will build on the widespread interest in turmeric’s health advantages. Its goals include increasing awareness and consumption, expanding international markets, and promoting R&D for new turmeric products. The board will prioritize skill development for turmeric growers. It will ensure high-quality standards. Turmeric is grown in more than 20 Indian states, with major production in Maharashtra, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. Prime Minister Modi highlighted the increasing global demand for turmeric and the need for a professional strategy. He indicated that the board will support farmers in various areas, from supply chain value addition to infrastructure.
