‘One lakh applications pending for Canada’: BJP MP flags situation of scholar visa delays in Lok Sabha

BJP Lok Sabha member Gopal Shetty on Tuesday urged the federal government to take up the difficulty of pending visa functions, notably of scholars, with embassies of international nations.

Raising the difficulty in the course of the Zero Hour in Lok Sabha, Shetty stated a number of college students, who had returned to India in the course of the Covid pandemic and the Ukraine warfare, have been discovering it tough to get visas to pursue research overseas.

“Several students have paid Rs 10-15 lakh as fees and are finding it difficult to get visas as several embassies are still closed. The problem is particularly acute with Canada where more than one lakh visa applications are pending,” Shetty stated.

He stated cultural troupes from Gujarat have been discovering it tough to get visas for performances within the US.

Shetty, a member from Mumbai North, urged the federal government to take up the difficulty with respective nations and likewise situation a clarification to the impact as the issue was with the embassies and never with the External Affairs Ministry.
