The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled its shortlist, and Anupam Kher’s ‘Tanvi the Great’ has clinched a coveted position in the Best Live Action Short Film race. The 78-year-old actor-director is ecstatic, calling it a ‘once-in-a-lifetime moment’ for his passion project.

‘Tanvi the Great’ weaves a tapestry of emotion around a child’s indomitable will against familial and societal odds. From 187 submissions, only nine films advanced, making this an elite achievement that puts Indian cinema in the spotlight.

Kher’s jubilant reaction lit up social platforms. ‘Tears of joy! Tanvi the Great makes it to the Oscar shortlist. This is dedicated to every unsung hero in our stories,’ he wrote, accompanied by behind-the-scenes footage.

Critics praise the film’s tight 30-minute runtime, powerful performances, especially from the young lead, and Kher’s assured direction. It’s a testament to storytelling that transcends borders without compromising cultural roots.

Reflecting on his journey, Kher recalls the challenges of making an independent short film amid big-budget spectacles. Yet, perseverance paid off, leading to festival wins and now this Oscar nod.

The shortlist sets the stage for intense competition as nominees are revealed next month. Should ‘Tanvi the Great’ advance, it would be a historic moment for Indian short films at the Oscars.

Bollywood celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan extended their best wishes, amplifying the film’s visibility. This milestone boosts prospects for more diverse voices from India.

As Hollywood turns its gaze eastward, ‘Tanvi the Great’ exemplifies how compact narratives can pack a punch. Anupam Kher’s delight is infectious, promising more such ventures from the maestro.
