The already tense political environment in Pakistan has taken a turn for the worse, with Maryam Nawaz issuing a direct threat against Bilawal Bhutto. The Chief Minister of Punjab warned that she would resort to breaking the fingers of individuals like Bilawal, reflecting the deep animosity between the two.

During a public rally, Maryam accused some people of exploiting the flood situation for political gain. She emphasized the suffering in Punjab due to the floods and the government’s efforts to manage the crisis. She then warned that while personal attacks against her were acceptable, she would react harshly to those who questioned the flood response.

Maryam Nawaz’s statement has led to an uproar in the National Assembly. Members of the PPP have called for an immediate apology. They emphasized that violence has no place in political debate. They also stated that Maryam’s words towards Bilawal were inappropriate.

The Punjab government and its allies are attempting to avoid further escalation of the issue. Their priority is to stabilize the flood-affected situation, for which they need resources.

How did this feud between Maryam and Bilawal escalate to such a volatile level? The PML-N of Maryam Nawaz and the PPP of Bilawal Bhutto are currently in a coalition government, yet their relationship has soured. The main reasons are:

    1. Bilawal Bhutto’s push to strengthen the Benazir Bhutto emergency fund. He wants to centralize funds there for public spending, a proposal that Maryam Nawaz has rejected.

    2. Bilawal Bhutto’s ambition to gain a foothold in Punjab, which is Pakistan’s largest and most politically significant province. Control of Punjab would allow the PPP to become the dominant party.

    3. The devastating floods in Punjab, which have displaced millions and caused huge economic losses. The slow government response and the lack of an immediate relief package have fueled criticism, which Maryam fears will damage her political standing.
