Aviation and defense observers have confirmed that the JF-17 Block III fighter jets, previously present in Azerbaijan for joint military exercises, have now officially joined the Azerbaijani Air Force. What initially appeared to be a routine training engagement was in fact the clandestine transfer of advanced combat aircraft from Pakistan to Baku.
These cutting-edge aircraft made a conspicuous debut during Azerbaijan’s Victory Day parade on November 8, 2025, with all prior Pakistani markings meticulously removed. Operated by Azerbaijani pilots, their participation in the aerial procession signaled their full integration into Azerbaijan’s defense inventory.
Pakistan has supplied the initial batch of three JF-17 Block III multirole fighter jets, including at least one twin-seat combat trainer, intended to replace Azerbaijan’s aging MiG-29 interceptors and their trainer variants. The Azerbaijani presidency has officially verified the arrival of five Pakistani JF-17 Thunder Block III fighters, comprising four single-seat and one twin-seat variant, now part of their air defense capabilities.
This delivery is a testament to the strengthening strategic cooperation between Pakistan and Azerbaijan, a sentiment positively acknowledged by Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif during the parade. The event featured a formation flypast over the capital city.
It is noteworthy that the aircraft flew without discernible national markings, indicating a preparatory phase before their official operational deployment. This public display confirmed the aircraft’s transfer, making Azerbaijan the fourth nation to officially operate the JF-17, following Pakistan, Myanmar, and Nigeria.
Evidence from footage indicates that the same jets had arrived in Azerbaijan in October for joint exercises with the Pakistan Air Force, bearing full Pakistani insignia. These markings were subsequently removed, though serial numbers remained visible, serving as a verifiable link. One aircraft, serial number 24-322, was documented in its complete Pakistani livery upon arrival and later in Azerbaijani colors during the parade.
The JF-17 Block III induction follows a series of structured bilateral defense agreements. In February 2024, Azerbaijan signed a significant $1.6 billion contract with Pakistan for the acquisition of these fighters, including training and ordnance. A single Block III was showcased to Azerbaijani leadership at the Azerbaijan International Defence Exhibition (ADEX) in September 2024.
Building on this foundation, Pakistan announced a larger export package in June 2025, comprising 40 JF-17 Block III aircraft valued at $4.6 billion, representing Pakistan’s most substantial defense export to date. This agreement outlines phased deliveries, pilot training, and comprehensive logistical support.
The November parade served as the official introduction of the first batch, highlighting the rapid implementation of the defense pact. Further deliveries are anticipated in multiple phases, synchronized with training schedules and weapons integration to ensure full operational readiness.
The JF-17 Thunder, jointly developed by China’s Chengdu Aircraft Corporation and Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, is a fourth-generation, single-engine, multirole fighter.
