The United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia have declared their recognition of Palestinian statehood, a move that is expected to draw disapproval from the United States and present a challenge to Israel.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on X that the United Kingdom formally recognizes the State of Palestine, with the intention of fostering peace for both Palestinians and Israelis and supporting a two-state solution.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also made an announcement on X, recognizing Palestine as a state.
The Canadian PM stated, “It is in this context that Canada recognises the State of Palestine and offers our partnership in building the promise of a peaceful future for both the State of Palestine and the State of Israel. Canada does so as part of a co-ordinated international effort to preserve the possibility of a two-state solution. While Canada is under no illusions that this recognition is a panacea, this recognition is firmly aligned with the principles of self-determination and fundamental human rights reflected in the United Nations Charter, and the consistent policy of Canada for generations.”
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also released a statement regarding the recognition of Palestinian statehood.
Although the decision has faced criticism from both Israel and the United States, the UK Prime Minister clarified that the primary objective is to end the war in Gaza and achieve peace.
