Grafted eggplant is a plant made by joining parts of two different plants, a strong-rooted plant (rootstock) and a high-quality fruit-bearing plant (scion). This technology increases eggplant yield, improves disease resistance, and reduces soil-related problems.

Mr. Murli Dhar Sahu from Karumauha village in the Kharsia development block of Raigad district is an inspiration for surrounding farmers. He used to cultivate traditional rice but, due to high costs and low profits, was dissatisfied with farming. Meanwhile he contacted horticulture department officials and received their guidance. That guidance became a major change in his agricultural life.

    Increased production at lower cost

Periodic technical advice, training and motivation from the horticulture department shifted his inclination from traditional farming to horticultural crops. Following the department’s recommendation, he planted grafted eggplant on one hectare. The use of organic fertilizer and organic pesticides kept the cost low and a significant increase in production was observed.

    Three-fold profit with modern technology

Under the National Horticulture Mission scheme he also received a subsidy of Rs. 20,000. This provided necessary resources and changed the direction and condition of farming. Previously the yield was 80–85 quintals, but after adopting modern technology the yield rose to 150–170 quintals. At a good market price, total income reached Rs. 4.5 lakh and total profit about Rs. 3 lakh, which is three times higher than before.

Organic method and high production at low cost

Seeing Murli Dhar Sahu’s success, farmers from surrounding rural and forest areas are also attracted to horticultural crops. The message of modern agriculture technology, organic method, and high production at low cost is spreading far and wide. His success story shows that with correct guidance, modern technology and plans, farmers can take large steps today towards economic strength.

A case made from one hectare – grafted eggplant changed economic condition

Murli Dhar Sahu from Kharsia has doubled the production by adopting modern eggplant farming on one hectare. With organic methods, departmental guidance and a subsidy from the horticulture mission he earned a net profit of about Rs. 3 lakh this season. This achievement has given new energy and hope to the farmers of the region.
