The Indian sports landscape is draped in mourning following the sudden demise of V. Srinivasa, spouse of celebrated athlete and IOA President PT Usha, on Friday in Kozhikode. The 67-year-old succumbed after collapsing at home, with medical efforts proving futile.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wasted no time in connecting with PT Usha, offering solace and stating his solidarity with the family. ‘In this moment of profound grief, my heart is with you. Praying for peace for the departed,’ he remarked.

Echoing the PM’s sentiments, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju took to social media: ‘Devastated by the news of V. Srinivasa’s passing. My prayers and thoughts are with PT Usha and her family during this challenging time.’

A steadfast central government retiree, Srinivasa was instrumental in nurturing PT Usha’s extraordinary career—from her silver medal near-miss at the 1984 Olympics to her leadership roles today. The couple’s son, Ujjwal, survives them.

PT Usha, fondly remembered as India’s ‘Flying Queen,’ has inspired millions with her speed and spirit. Fans, fellow athletes, and officials have flooded social platforms with messages of strength and sympathy.

This loss hits hard at a time when Usha continues to champion Indian sports on global stages. It highlights the unseen support systems that propel icons forward. The nation watches with empathy as Usha navigates this personal storm.
