Sudan’s Foreign Minister Mohieldin Salim Ahmed Ibrahim landed in New Delhi for the second India-Arab Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, where he not only discussed his nation’s civil unrest but also showered praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stewardship, congratulating India’s electorate.

The interview with IANS delved into Sudan’s protracted crisis since the April 2023 outbreak of civil war. Civilian casualties mount daily, with mass displacements tearing apart communities and exacerbating long-standing unrest. Ibrahim highlighted a multi-pronged response, including UN partnerships. ‘We’ve taken many decisions,’ he explained. UN envoys have met directly with citizens, enabled by government facilitation. ‘We’re doing good work for our people.’

In a surprising pivot, the minister celebrated India’s leadership. ‘Kudos for a PM who prioritizes his people’s welfare and opens new doors,’ he said. ‘His consistent election wins deserve applause.’ Such words from a key African voice amplify Modi’s international acclaim.

The high-profile IAFMM, co-chaired by India and UAE this Saturday, assembles Arab League foreign ministers and the Secretary-General. It follows the fourth Senior Officials’ huddle on Friday, aiming to propel partnerships forward. A decade after the 2014 Bahrain inaugural, where five focus areas – energy, economy, education, media, culture – were set with initiatives, this meet reignites momentum.

Institutionalized since a 2002 India-Arab League MoU, the framework has matured into a robust platform. As per the MEA, the IAFMM stands as the paramount structure for advancing this vital alliance.

With Sudan’s crisis underscoring the need for solidarity, the summit could unlock enhanced trade, security collaboration, and knowledge exchange. Ibrahim’s endorsement positions India as a beacon of stable, inclusive leadership, inspiring partners amid turbulent times.
