Prime Minister Modi’s arrival in the Maldives marked the beginning of a visit aimed at strengthening the relationship between the two nations. The trip started with attendance at the 60th Independence Day celebrations, where PM Modi was the Guest of Honour, which also served as a marker of 60 years of diplomatic relations. The visit is especially important given the change in relations after President Muizzu assumed office. The President had made statements critical of India and expressed a desire to align with China. The goal of the visit is to repair and strengthen relations. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri underscored the Maldives’ significance as a crucial partner within the ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and the MAHASAGAR vision. Discussions will include the India-Maldives Joint Vision for a ‘Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership’. Development projects, supported by India, will be inaugurated. G. Balasubramanian, the High Commissioner of India to the Maldives, said multiple MoUs are planned to be signed during the visit. Prime Minister Modi was given an official welcome at Republic Square in Malé, Maldives, and he engaged in meetings with the Maldivian government. The President of Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu, accompanied him.
