Former U.S. President Donald Trump, during a meeting with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, alluded to the possibility of Russian President Vladimir Putin attending the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The event, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is set to be the largest in the tournament’s history, featuring 48 teams. Trump’s comments were made while reviewing the preparations for the event. He shared a photo taken in Alaska with Putin. Trump indicated that Putin’s presence was contingent on future developments, stating, “I believe he (Putin) will be coming (to the 2026 FIFA World Cup), depending on what happens. He’s been very respectful of me and of our country but not so respectful of others.” This statement came as Trump voiced his opinions on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. The meeting also featured lighter moments, with Trump playfully discussing the U.S. team’s prospects and playfully inquired about the World Cup trophy. The upcoming tournament represents a historic moment in the competition’s history, as it will be hosted across three nations. The official draw is scheduled for December in Washington. The 1994 World Cup, hosted in the United States, significantly boosted the sport’s popularity in North America, and the 2026 edition is expected to attract worldwide attention.
