The selection of Poonam Pandey to play Mandodari in the Luv Kush Ramlila at Delhi’s Red Fort has triggered a negative reaction from the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP). Surendra Gupta, the Delhi state minister of the VHP, has written to the Luv Kush Ramlila committee, requesting a review of the decision. The letter emphasizes the cultural importance of Ramlila, beyond just a theatrical presentation, and its place in Indian society and traditions. UNESCO’s recognition of the cultural significance of Ramlila was also noted.

The letter from VHP outlined their specific concerns: They stressed the importance of cultural suitability and respect for the audience’s feelings when choosing actors for Ramayana-based productions. The character of ‘Mandodari’ is a symbol of righteousness. The letter highlighted the importance of selecting an actress whose image embodies these qualities. The VHP stated that Pandey’s public image could potentially disturb or offend devotees. The organization suggested the committee reconsider the choice and cast an actress with a suitable background or public image. Surendra Kumar Gupta clarified that the VHP’s aim is not to criticize individual artists but to uphold the cultural value and the trust of the devotees associated with such religious events. He also stated that the main aim of Ramlila is to promote religion, morality and customs and that all decisions must align with this purpose. The letter concluded with the VHP’s hope that the Luv Kush Ramlila committee will understand the gravity of the issue and come to a resolution that is respectful of all parties involved.
