President Droupadi Murmu recently stressed the critical importance of education for the holistic development of tribal societies and overall regional progress, asserting that maintaining cultural identity is equally vital. During her address at the ‘Kartik Jatra’ socio-cultural festival in Gumla, Jharkhand, she called upon tribal youth to embrace contemporary education, science, and technology while staying deeply connected to their ancestral roots and traditions.
“Education serves as the strongest bedrock for development. Inclusive societal and state advancement is impossible without its widespread accessibility,” President Murmu articulated. She paid homage to the esteemed tribal leader Kartik Oraon, recognizing his profound commitment to social reform. The President noted that Oraon’s dedication to his people and homeland, even after obtaining education overseas, continues to be honored through the Kartik Jatra festival. She expressed happiness that Oraon’s vision of establishing a university in Gumla is on the verge of becoming a reality.
President Murmu highlighted the resource-rich nature and ancient living traditions of the region where Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha converge. She described her trip to Jharkhand as a sacred experience, drawing parallels with the legacy of Lord Birsa Munda, a figure celebrated across India for his contributions to tribal empowerment and social justice. The President also remembered Jatra Tana Bhagat, a notable freedom fighter from Gumla, credited with leading a non-violent, Gandhian movement against colonial oppression. The bravery of Param Vir Chakra awardee Shaheed Albert Ekka in the 1971 war was also cited as an eternal example of patriotism and sacrifice.
President Murmu lauded the vibrant artistic traditions of tribal communities, pointing out that their cultural contributions have earned national recognition, with more than 100 tribal artists receiving the prestigious Padma Shri award. The festival, which featured impressive performances by tribal artists from several states, drew a large enthusiastic audience and was graced by the presence of senior political leaders and government officials.
